Troilus and Criseyde, Geoffrey Chaucer
Right as oure firste letter is now an A,
In beaute first so stood she, makeles.
Hire goodly lokyng gladed al the prees.
Nas nevere yet seyn thing to ben preysed derre,
Nor under cloude blak so bright a serre.
Translation, Barry Windeatt:
Just as our first letter is now an A, so she stood first in beauty, matchless. Her lovely looks gladdened all the crowd. Never yet was anything seen that was to be praised more highly, nor so bright a star under a black cloud.
